While it certainly won’t be like your previous, pre-baby trips to New York, taking a baby to New York City is more fun than you might think. Your shoe shopping and Cosmopolitan consumption will likely wane in favor of walks in the park and fancy cupcakes. But, if you love New York, you’ll still love New York with a baby.
And while on previous trips to New York you may have been ok with couch surfing, hostel diving, or staying in a hotel that’s off the beaten path, chances are you’d rather keep things comfortable for yourselves and baby while you’re taking a break from exploring. As a rule, NYC hotel rooms are notoriously tiny and outrageously expensive, but there are New York hotels for families at every price point.
The Big Apple is totally doable for a family with a baby or toddler in tow; here are five hotels that’ll welcome your tiny traveler…
Great New York Hotels for Families
Best Western Hospitality House
The residential look and feel of the Best Western Hospitality House and its surroundings will probably trigger raging “move to New York” fantasies as soon as you enter your suite. All guest rooms are either one- or two-bedroom apartments. They have fully-equipped kitchens and plenty of space to spread out amongst your baby gear. Cribs are available upon request. The plentiful (included) hot breakfast features lots of toddler-friendly breakfast items like fresh fruit and bagels. There’s even make-your-own waffles for a travel treat. This is one of our absolute favourite New York hotels for families.
Hampton Inn Madison Square Garden
Just a block from Penn Station (super handy if you’re flying into Newark) the Hampton Inn Madison Square Garden offers spacious renovated rooms with breakfast included in the rate. Cribs and highchairs are available upon request. The hotel is within easy walking distance to the Empire State Building, Bryant Park, and of course, Madison Square Garden. Small touches like a complimentary beverage station and free high-speed internet access help to make your stay more comfortable.
The Westin New York Grand Central
Steps from the UN, steps from the Chrysler Building, and next to several easy family-friendly delis and a 24hr Walgreens, The Westin New York Grand Central is a newer and comfortable hotel with good sized rooms that are bigger than the New York average in addition to being clean and renovated. There’s a fee for WiFi. But once you dive into their “Heavenly” bed, you’ll probably crash before logging into Facebook anyway. We had our mini-bar cleared out so we had full run of the little fridge. You could probably squeeze in a few things around the teeny vodka bottles in a pinch.
The Mark
If your budget is a little more, shall we say, flexible, a stay at The Mark on the Upper East Side will definitely welcome you a little differently — with a branded Maclaren stroller, for a start. Guests at The Mark traveling with children aged between six months and five years can access the strollers, as well as take advantage of their Movie Night menus of DVDs and theater-style snacks and plan a picnic in the park with a ‘lunch-to-go’ prepared by chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. The Mark is across the street from Central Park and steps from many museums and galleries including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Guggenheim. Small babies that are happy to ride in strollers are great museum guests. Take advantage of that while you can!
Mandarin Oriental
Most luxury hotel brands are the most baby-friendly around, and the Mandarin Oriental in New York City is no exception. Advise the hotel before your arrival of your children’s names and ages, and they will prepare an age appropriate welcome amenity as well as complimentary baby toiletries. The full gammut of baby equipment can be arranged for, including cribs and rollaway beds, childproofing accessories. Also available are Diaper Genies, bottle warmers, and high chairs, as well as colouring books, crayons, and children’s DVDs. Even stroller rentals can be arranged through the concierge, who will also help you arrange activities and outings upon request.
