Family Friendly Activities on Maui
Maui’s seamless blending of natural beauty, adventure, relaxation, and culture has made it a favorite destination for the jet-setting family. Finding that balance of activities that will keep the adults entertained and the children engaged can be difficult, but with the potential for fun hiding in just about every corner of this dynamic island, you and your little ones will be able to create lasting memories that you’ll bring up years down the road! From informative exhibits on our neighbors beneath the waves of the Pacific to manageable hikes for the ideal holiday card backdrop, you’ll be happy that you chose this piece of paradise as your vacation destination.
After you’ve rested up at one of the many Maui hotels, your kids are going to be itching for some fun in the Hawaiian sun. To avoid the timeless “are we there yet?” question, here are a few family-friendly suggestions that will keep a smile on everyone’s faces.
On Maui, the beaches essentially act as time machines–carrying you and your family forward by the hour in a state of island bliss. If you’re hoping to complement your experience frolicking in the waves of the Pacific with an informative afternoon, there is no better place to do so than the Maui Ocean Center. Just up and around the hook of the beautiful Maalaea Bay on Maui’s Western coast, the center is teeming with exhibits on many of the creatures that call the waters around Hawaii home. Fish, sea turtles, hammerhead sharks, and rays interact amongst the reefs, bringing you and your kids face to face with a tremendous array of colors and creatures. Make sure you find your way to the Tide Pool before you leave, where your kids will be able to gain some hands-on experience with the sea life.
Depending on the adventurousness and age of your kids, going on a zipline ride through the lush greens of Maui forests is a great way to get everyone’s blood pumping! Many different companies offer a wide variety of tours across various lines, with some even allowing tandem rides so as to experience the thrill with a partner. Once you dip off into a weightless state, careening through the trees, you’ll have yourself a truly unique Maui experience. There is a certain degree of risk involved, so make sure you prepare yourselves properly for the ride. Most importantly, have a blast!
As adults, you’d like to experience what makes the Hawaiian islands unique while keeping it interesting for your little ones. Trying new foods can open up a new world for youngsters while also giving you parents something to write home about. For an authentic Hawaiian outing that will introduce your family to new food and cultural elements, look no further than a Luau! Between the traditional hula dancing and the delicious food (Kalua Pua’a, which is pork cooked in an underground over, is truly spectacular), you’ll learn a bit about what Hawaiians have been doing for centuries, and all in a family-friendly manner that you and your kids are sure to enjoy. The Old Lahaina Luau is right on the water, and features a terrific menu to explore.
After uninterrupted fun on the beach, it will feel good to get away, even if only for an afternoon. Maui has a huge host of hiking options that are manageable for the whole family, such as the Kuloa Point Trail on the Southeastern side of the island. This easy loop will have you happening upon amazing views of the ocean, as well as large pools should you want to pop in for a dip. You’ll also notice some pre-Western contact Hawaii sites and walls. There are many other trailheads just waiting to be taken, so pick a few for yourselves and marvel in the beauty!
