ST. GEORGE’S: GRENDADIAN BY REX RESORT
November 2007
A.K. & Family
What a great place for a holiday. There’s very little to do in Grenada, so a top choice to totally chill out. We found the staff to be absolutely lovely, so friendly and helpful, and they created the right atmosphere among the guests who were all very sociable too.
I’ve seen better beaches in the Caribbean – it’s not jaw dropping, but it’s still a sight for sore eyes if you come from London. The weather in Oct/Nov was rainy on the first day (the showers come and go), followed by a straight run of very hot sun. There are all sorts of water sports to enjoy, and people seemed to be taking full advantage of those, especially the Hobi-Cats which go like the clappers.
Some of the great things about the hotel:
- You’re not allowed to reserve sun loungers, so there’s none of that competitive behaviour. There are plenty to go around anyway, another pleasant surprise. Families with young children tended to congregate by the pool, we found.
- The staff all seemed very happy to be working there, and determined to give you a great time. It’s been very hard to leave 3 meals a day with loads of choice (plus afternoon tea and cake), especially the chef who stands at breakfast chopping and plating fresh tropical fruit for you.
- They just know what they’re doing. I recommend all-inclusive and then you have nothing at all to worry about. You can just relax into it and let the stresses just float away.
- It’s hot right into the evening, so I never wore any of my cardigans.
If I had to critique I’d say:
- There are a lot of biting things. Sand flies, mozzies, the lot. So take a lot of repellent.
- The hawkers on the beach can be a pain in the arse, but generally they know not to be persistent and they’re good at reading people.
- It’s not the place for wild nightlife (except the evenings when the Virgin Atlantic crew are staying, which was a bit of an eye-opener)
I think it’s worth paying extra for a sea view room, although no need to go the whole hog and get a beachfront. We used a hillside room as a courtesy room to have a shower before we left, and it was a bit tatty. We certainly felt our sea view room had been in a different league.
My congrats and thanks to all the staff at the Rex for a fantastic time. We found Grenadians to be very friendly, and the hotel exemplifies that.
