Trinidad, Cuba
On the Caribbean coast between the lovely stretch of Playa Ancon, and the Sierra Escambray mountain range, Trinidad is a beautiful colonial town – the third Spanish settlement in Cuba – with lots to do and see in the surrounding areas.
Featuring a maze of narrow, cobblestone (more like rocky, actually!) streets, and some of the most beautifully-preserved colonial architecture, the old part of Trinidad is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The streets of pastel houses with wrought iron railings at the windows are home to art galleries and paladars alike, and we caught a glimpse of an incredible old library on the way to Plaza Mayor.
Stroll through Plaza Mayor, visit the Museo Romantico and spend some time browsing the artisan street markets, where you can buy beautiful woodcarvings, fabric, art, and crochet pieces.
Trinidad is beautiful, safe, clean, and bustling. It can get quite busy with tourists, but it still feels like real Cuba.
The nearest beach resort area is Playa Ancon. While nowhere near as vast a stretch of beach as Varadero, Playa Ancon is home to two beach hotels, and a few sections of public beach where you can get fantastic mojitos and really good grilled shrimp at really reasonable prices. It feels good to go off-resort for a bit of a change of scenery and some excellent people watching.
