Cayo Santa Maria is in the agricultural province of Ciego de Avila, connected to the mainland by a causeway that connects the islands of Cayo Las Brujas (35 km), Cayo Ensenachos (42 km) and Cayo Santa Maria (45 km) to the village of Caibarien. The islands are part of Cuba’s northern coral reef, which yields spectacular snorkeling and diving. The closest airport to Cayo Santa Maria is the Santa Clara International Airport (SNU), and the tranfer from the airport to the resort area takes approximately 90 minutes.
No Cubans live on Cayo Santa Maria, it is strictly a hotel zone. There is fake village called Pueblo Las Estrellas next to the Barcelo resort, that offers a number of different restaurants, a bowling alley, and an ice cream parlour. Nearby towns on the mainland are Remedios, that features one of North America’s oldest Catholic Churches, as well as Santa Clara, where you can visit the Che Guevara memorial as well as one of the sites of the battle of Santa Clara, the last battle before victory in the Cuban Revolution.
