Carry-On, Traveling Families!
Big, big news this week, as Spirit Airlines has announced that they will be charging for carry-on baggage – as much as $45.00 USD. You’ll be granted one complimentary piece of hand baggage, provided it will fit under the seat in front of you.
Considering Spirit also charges for checked luggage, unless you plan on traveling empty-handed, there’s really no savvy way to avoid these fees. For families traveling with babies and small children, it’s pretty much a guarantee that you’ll be adding to your fare.
Or not. Families, just don’t fly Spirit Airlines.
And all those people who complain about babies and toddlers on flights, please do fly Spirit Airlines. All those travelers who manage to survive a week away by washing your underwear in the sink every night, Spirit is the airline for you. Not only will you be able to skirt their extra fees, you can be sure that there will be very few (if any) families with babies on board. Or toddlers. Or preschoolers.
Families traveling with babies and small children – here’s my tried and true carry-on packing list. You can fit it all into MOST airlines’ hand baggage allotments.
Surviving Early Morning Flights With A Baby, Toddler, Or Young Child…
I was definitely dreading it, our first flight with baby. Not only had I read horror story after horror story about how she was going to scream the entire time and everyone would be shooting daggers at us, but I also had to drag my sweetly sleeping baby out of her crib a solid 5 hours earlier than I usually would!
Booking a flight at 7:30 made sense at the time, we were always up then anyway. It was only after I had paid for everything that it occured to me we had to be at the airport 3 hours before that, therefore leaving the house 45 minutes before that! We had to get up at what time? Was there any point in even going to bed?
Flying WestJet With A Baby…
For our most recent trip to Cuba, we booked online with WestJet Vacations.
This is WestJet’s first year flying into Cuba (Varadero, Cayo Coco & Holguin), and the first thing that struck me was how civilized the flight times are. Typically for Cuba you’re looking at an at least 7am departure, with 8pm departures home becoming more and more common (VERY difficult with a baby or toddler in tow). We left for Cayo Coco at a very reasonable 10am and our return at 2:45pm worked extremely well with our little passengers. Read more »
