Carry-On, Traveling Families!

Have Carry-On, Will Travel

Big, big news this week, as Spirit Airlines has announced that they will be charging for carry-on baggage – as much as $45.00 USD.  (Updated May 3, 2012 – Spirit is increasing their carry-on fees to $100. Yes, that’s ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS). You’ll be granted one complimentary piece of hand baggage, provided it will fit under the seat in front of you.

Considering Spirit also charges for checked luggage, unless you plan on traveling empty-handed, there’s really no savvy way to avoid these fees.  For families traveling with babies and small children, it’s pretty much a guarantee that you’ll be adding to your fare.

Or not. Families, just don’t fly Spirit Airlines.

And all those people who complain about babies and toddlers on flights, please do fly Spirit Airlines.  All those travelers who manage to survive a week away by washing your underwear in the sink every night, Spirit is the airline for you.  Not only will you be able to skirt their extra fees, you can be sure that there will be very few (if any) families with babies on board. Or toddlers. Or preschoolers.

Families traveling with babies and small children – here’s my tried and true carry-on packing list.  You can fit it all into MOST airlines’ hand baggage allotments.

Agreed. We’re not likely to fly if every time we get price-gauged at check-in. Thankfully we never fly Spirit anyways. :)

I’ve heard they’re the American equivalent of Ryanair – ridiculously low fares but charge extra for every. little. thing. And now carry-ons!

I see your point. Stick all the crabby baby haters on Spirit. The fun loving families can find other airlines.
